Observation: Found a large ant out in an open field. Have seen small pavement ants in the Seldovia area before but not these large hairy ants. Was around 10 mm in length.
LEO says: This may be Formica neorufibarbis, widely distributed species in much of the western United States and Canada, often in the boreal coniferous forest areas. Adult Formica ants can range in size from 3mm to 12mm. In these ants, the gaster, or the last segment of the body opposite the head, will be shiny with small hairs. This shiny quality indicates it is of the neorufibarbis species complex. Other characteristics, such as lack of hair on the bottom (ventral surface) of the head, and on the top of the second abdominal segment (dorsum of the petiole), give positive speices confirmation. However, these are difficult to see without a good light source.

UAF Cooperative Extension Consult Jessie Moan writes: "Unfortunately, based on this image, it is impossible for me to know what type of ant this is. I can only barely see the individual and it is not a complete view."
LEO says If another opportunity arises, it would be great to have more photographs from a variety of angles. This may help confirm identification.
