Iliamna Lake is not frozen, very unusual for midwinter conditions.
Observation: February 21, 2016 and Iliamna Lake is not frozen . Not a speck of ice anywhere . Very unusual for midwinter we should be driving trucks on it by now.
LEO Comment: We have been receiving many observations this winter related to warm, unseasonable weather and also poor ice conditions. In fact we have set up a trend to follow the unseasonable weather conditions this winter from across the state. The Trend Post is attached.
We have also received observations about ice conditions on Lake Illiamna before. On December 24, 2015, Gerald Analon, IGAP Coordinator with Illiamna Tribal Council, posted an observation about the delayed freeze up. This observation is also included as a related post.
For more information about climate change impacts in the Lake Iliamna area, see Climate Change in Nondalton Alaska.
A time lapse movie made in 2013 by the Nondalton Tribal Council documents one of the first winters (2013-2014) when unseasonable conditions resulted in late freeze-up, and even mid winter break-up. You can see the movie on the LEO YouTube Channel. M. Brubaker
