Snow had begun to melt, temperatures were on the rise, and migrating birds started to return to the area. Spring was finally starting to emerge, until snowstorm Xanto wreaked havoc on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula dumping 7-11 inches of snow in a 48 hour period (NOAA, 2018). The nearby community, Negaunee reported over 23 inches, with a record breaking 15.8 inches on April 15 (Lewis, 2018).
Discussions with local residents confirmed that there was a lack of significant snowfall during the winter, but April snowfalls have increased in the recent years. One resident stated that winter seemed to shift a month, starting a bit later and extending into the spring further.
