High winter winds and warm temperatures

We've had so much wind this winter, on the 15th of January, the winds were warm!!!!!! Not looking good; before total freeze up the sea ice (piles and cracks) began to move in the Bay and Lagoon by mid to late December. Just happy the ice didn't move up on the front part of town, otherwise, we'd be looking for emergency housing.

This event is similar to another observation from Golovin, submitted in December of 2016, where a significant winter storm pushed ice on to the beach and threatened homes.The ANTHC Emergency Preparedness Program encourages the development of community emergency plans in case events, like ice pile up, occur. They have provided several resources, listed below, which can be used in emergency planning and response. This observation has been shared with the ANTHC Emergency Preparedness Program. It has also been added to the LEO Sea Ice Project hosted by UAF's Arctic Research Center and Unusual Weather Project, hosted by the National Weather Service.

Alaska Emergency Response Guide for Small Communities is a planning tool for local government leaders as they prepare for, respond to, and recover from a disaster or emergency in their community.
