Insects in January

Observation by Sonny Lamont:

Never seen a mosquito this late in the winter. Landed on car outside window. Took a picture then it flew off.

The earliest mosquito post in the LEO record is from Anchorage on April 16th. This post was shared with Derek Sikes from UAF Museum for help on identification.

That's a non-biting midge (family Chironomidae). In any case, active adult insects in January in that part of Alaska although unusual, are more expected there (near the warmer coast) than in interior or arctic Alaska.
