New Beaked Whale Species (Berardius)

Observation: A dead whale washed ashore last year and through months of work it was discovered that it is a new species of beaked whale. It shows how little we know about the ocean and how exciting it is to know that there are still new megafuana to be discovered. This observation was made by our Island Sentinel Program and it underlines how important and exciting it is monitoring our shores for new things. K. Holser

LEO says: A team of scientists and local experts have worked collaboratively on this exciting project. The finding (a new whale species) has been published in the Marine Mammal Science journal, a peer review journal.
