4-27-14 Geometridae moth - Naknek, Alaska, USA
Observation: This insect was found in Naknek by Chris Palmer. It was on a power pole near birch trees. It was on the metal marker on the pole. It is interesting because we had not seen an insect like this before. Posted by Tracy Palmer.
Video: You can see a video of the insect on the LEO Network YouTube channel.
LEO says: This post was copied to BBNA Environmental Planner Sue Flensburg and to the UAF Cooperative Extension for assistance with identification. Jesse Moan with the UAF Cooperative Extension writes, "This is a female adult moth in the family Geometridae." Jessie writes, "It is not uncommon for the females to be wingless in some species of moths. I have a guess as to the genus and species of the insect, but it is just my best guess. A lot of these types of moths can look very similar and ultimately require dissection and other fun stuff to get to the species (awesome, right? note sarcasm). This would be a great thing to look for next April! You can find more information about Geometrid moths, Source: Wikipedia.
