The winter so far has seen very little snow in Iceland. December snowfall was well below average in both Reykjavík and Akureyri. Meteorologist Elín Björk Jónasdóttir says it has been one of the least white winters in living memory so far.
Sipilä said that during his 40 years working for state-owned parks and wildlife management agency Metsähallitus, he has never seen such poor ice conditions in January.
The building, 30 feet to the gable, is buried in snow.
Considerable danger of avalanches in East Iceland has led to evacuations in the town of Seyðisfjörður.
