Coastline along town had sheets of ice pushed against it, maybe 20 to 30 yards deep, this has not happened since 2012, 5 years ago.
Observation: From Monday, April 3, 2017 to Thursday April 6, 2017, sheets of ice were pushed from the north by a strong wind, coming to St. George Island. By the end of the week, all of the coast along the town had sheets of ice pushed against it, maybe 20 to 30 yards deep. According to those living in St. George, this has not happened since 2012, 5 years ago. Local residents anticipate that it will improve the fishing season, bringing more nutrients to local waters.
LEO says: We have shared this observation with the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. IARC monitors and studies sea ice conditions in Alaska. All sea ice observations are included in the LEO Sea Ice Project (attached). This is the first sea ice observations in the system from St. George and the second in LEO Network for 2017.
