Observation: Seasons vary in this region. Winter seems to be changing and not be as fluent as the normal. Land is dry because of the lack of moisture. The deer have an unusual mange. The water in some parts of the reservation is not drinkable. Some tribes depend on water that comes from the Missouri River which in my opinion is questionable.
LEO says: This observation is a milestone, the first in LEO Network from South Dakota. The types of broad changes described (seasons, droughts) are likely drivers for many types of potential impacts on the natural system and even on the built environment. We hope that more people in South Dakota will join LEO and that this network can help in some way to share knowledge, document impacts, identify emerging trends and connect with topic experts. Getting a photo of a deer with the mange may help with identification, if identification is needed. Only by documenting environmental changes can we begin to understand them. LEO welcomes the conversation with local, indigenous and western science experts. Thank you Alex.
