Algal Bloom

Very large algae bloom that covers most of the bay.

Chris Whitehead with the Sitka Tribe of Alaska writes:

Based on the color from the pictures, it may be a Noctiluca bloom (non toxic). But we are also seeing pseudo-nitzschia in samples around SE (Southeast) and in Katchemak Bay. If you can get a net tow and take a look in your scope that would be great. Take pics if you can.

The testing of water samples for harmful algal blooms (HABs) is ongoing. Samples collected from Viking Cove in Haines have resulted in a shellfish harvest advisory because of elevated levels. Extremely high levels of toxic algae have resulted in shellfish harvest advisorites across southern Alaska this summer.
